Bio

A Welcome Distraction was born in May of 2017, with members Jos Vicars and Candice Rae coming together through a serendipitous blend of universal guidance and artistic fusion. Bassist, guitarist, and multi-instrumental vocalist Jos radiates the same uninhibited, soulful qualities on stage as he did growing up in the salty waters on the coast of South Carolina. His musical journey has taken him from around the country to around the world, playing in countries like Australia, Sweden, Norway and The Netherlands, but also a bit closer to home in places like Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic and the Virgin Islands. Offstage, you can find him spending time with his wife and son, teaching him how to kitesurf, sail, backpack, and compose music inspired by nature... just like his dad.

As an expressive vocalist, tambourine handler, and amateur puccalo, Candice Rae finds joy by combining two of her favorite things, music and travel. Originally from Buffalo, NY, Candice was classically trained from a young age, and toured both locally and throughout Europe with performance troupes. At 21, she performed as a featured soloist on NPR for the Requiem of Mr. Rogers in Pittsburgh. After relocating to Hilton Head, Candice performed in several shows at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, where she grew as a musician and performer, developing new skills in musical theatre, jazz and rock. Her experience there led to new opportunities pursuing music full time, and solidified her deep love for the Lowcountry lifestyle.

Combined, the energy and sound of A Welcome Distraction reflects the love of music and life that both Jos and Candice cultivate through each song.  They are known for their tight harmonies and creative arrangements, playing an eclectic mixture of island sounds, classics, originals, pop and rock. A Welcome Distraction achieves exactly that- a gladsome journey experienced through music, bringing people together, one verse at a time.
